Swing Band Reunion a Hit - Again!
PHBC was a swinging place Sunday afternoon! We had 200 folks in Hicks Hall for the Swing Band Reunion concert. The community really turned out in force to enjoy a free swing concert on a beautiful afternoon. Our folks brought friends, and fans of the band also attended.
Our chalkboard signs on the sidewalk brought some folks, and our youth stood on the front sidewalk to greet people and show the way into the church. We set up the large speaker in the outside garden area so people passing the church could hear the fun! Many came in and joined us.
The Youth sold popcorn, candy and sodas to earn extra money for their 2010 mission trip!
Members of the Swing Band Reunion are former classmates and members of the original Little Rock Central High School swing band in the 1950s. They play the beautiful ballroom classics that poured forth from real dance orchestras in the 1940s and 1950s. Their repertoire includes “Tuxedo Junction”, “In the Mood”, “Moonlight Serenade” and “The Way You Look Tonight”. The popular sounds of Count Basie, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller come to life again. Vocalist Nan Renaud sings the great lyrics that are part of this legacy.
The eighteen members of Swing Band Reunion had been out of touch for over forty years, when two members began corresponding about the idea of reuniting the group to rehearse and perform. They arranged to rehearse in our church, and they’ve presented a couple of concerts as a way of saying “thanks”. We understand they’ll be ready to do another concert in a few months!
We want people to know that PHBC is a Baptist church that has FUN and celebrates living joyfully! Keep telling the good news! Thanks to everyone who helped make the day such a success!
