Dr. Hyde’s Tidings Post for May 24, 2011

As most of you are aware, PHBC was in on the ground floorwith Interfaith Hospitality Network. I know pride goeth before afall, but I’ll use the p-word anyway. I’ve been proud that we werecharter members and helped pave the way for this fine program ofproviding housing for homeless families. As you are also aware, ithas not always been a seamless operation. IHN has gone throughsome difficult financial times, and had to shut down its operations for ten months.

Back up and running, and having adopted the nationalorganization’s name, Family Promise of Pulaski County has hired anew executive director and seems to be on better footing. Ourchurch recently gave a gift of $500 from our benevolence account to assist with theirreorganization.

Shari Coote, former pastor of Pulaski Heights Christian Church, is theorganization’s hard-working board chair. She came by our Farmers Market Saturday, bought a few items, and thanked me and others in our church for our continuedsupport. Then, last Wednesday, we received the following letter from her…

Dear Pulaski Heights Baptist Church:

Thank you so much for your generous donation to Family Promise of Pulaski County. We are so grateful for your commitment to Family Promise, and its goal of helpinghomeless families with children to get off the streets and into safe, affordable housing.

As you know we have recently gone through some difficult, but productive times.Fortunately we have come to the end of the tunnel, and it’s a bright, shiny Day! Withour recent hiring of Cynthia Ramey as our Executive Director, and after ten monthsof re-building with God’s help, we began serving families again on May 1. Your continued faith in what Family Promise is doing by making this donation is most appreciated. Your gift affirms that we are taking the right step in moving forward.

On a separate note, we are also grateful for the Kids’ Closet. Our very first family hasalready benefited from this great project sponsored by your youth.

Again many thanks for your service, your faith, your generosity, and your enthusiastic support of Family Promise at every level.

Blessings,Shari Coote, Chair Board of Directors

The Kid’s Closet to which Shari refers is on the third floor of our educationalbuilding. Through a grant from Youth Works, our youth group and leaders havedeveloped a collection area for items specific to children’s needs. Participatingfamilies in Family Promise have access to these items. If you have questions aboutthis, see Joni Lee, Sandy Thomas, or Judy Moses. And let me add my thanks to thesegreat church leaders for their vision and efforts.
